Winter Events in Menorca

Although winter sees most of the Menorca villas closed during the first part of the year, if you are on the island for any reason, you shouldn’t worry that there’s going to be nothing happening. While not many non-locals will choose the Mediterranean island as a haven of New Year relaxation and a spot of winter sun, that doesn’t mean that those on the island must stay indoors for the entire duration. If you do find yourself with restless feet during your time on the island, there are a number of magazines and websites that are regularly produced, highlighting the best upcoming cultural events. Tourists are encouraged to drop by during the many feasts and festivities and to dip their toe in an important part of Menorcan life.

Early Year Festivities
Those spending time in Menorca villas at the beginning of the year will find plenty of events to warm them up if the winter sun is not enough. New Year’s Day, known locally as Año Nuevo, is as big a deal in the Balearics as it is around the rest of the continent. As a notionally Catholic island, Epiphany, on the 5th of January, is also an important festival.

Special Balearic Events
In January, February and March, there are a number of events that take place in the Balearics. The events are easily accessible for those occupying Menorca villas and houses, even those that take place in Mallorca – what better excuse could you need to travel to Menorca’s big sister?

Revelta i Beneides de Sant Antoni Abat, 16th – 17th January: The first festival on the list requires a trip across to Mallorca. Revelta i Beneides de Sant Antoni Abat is a festival full of colour. It is one of the best times to see the locals wearing their traditional clothes and to join them for songs and dances, as well as offering one of the most impressive winter feasts you can find anywhere in the world.

Processo dels Tres Tocs, 17th January: One of the great Menorcan festivals. The procession is an ancient occasion held in Cuitadella and is held to celebrate the victory of Alfonso III, the local monarch, over an invading Moorish force in 1287.

St George’s day. If you’re going to be staying in any of the many beautiful Menorca villas in late April, then the island also celebrates St George’s Day on the 23rd April. As the often-overlooked patron saint of England, why not see how the day is celebrated elsewhere?
