Walking USA History – Old and New

If you enjoy walking, USA destinations may offer unrivalled opportunities. It hopefully goes without saying that the USA is an extraordinarily large country. This could mean that as you study a map, you may run the risk of being slightly intimidated as you work out just how long it will take you to walk from, say, Los Angeles to Washington!

Perhaps the first thing to do, if you wish to avoid building a physique like Arnold Schwarzenegger’s, is to think in a little more targeted fashion about where in the USA you would like to do some walking. There is no easy way of doing this other than to think about your own personal preferences, but here are a few ideas relating to walking, USA destinations and where perhaps your interests might lie.

Southern history

The ‘deep south’ and the southwest of America offer a chance to see fascinating sights that relate to both the history and development of the United States, as well as its future. For example, at the Alamo a number of Texan defenders stood against the Mexican army in the fight for what was, at the time, Texan independence. Looking at the old mission and surrounding areas may be very enjoyable if you are into history.

The South is heavily laden with such opportunities including fabulously historical cities such as New Orleans and Charleston, as well as the great cotton plantations and mansions of a now bygone age.

In stark contrast it is also possible to explore the Cape Canaveral space centre to see where the American space programme launches – an integral part of the USA’s contemporary history.

You might also enjoy guided tours around the Everglades and swamps of Florida, where you will get the opportunity to see unique creatures and plant life.

Where it all started

Across the Potomac River heading north, you leave Virginia and enter Maryland and Washington DC. Most people would say that is when you enter the north and leave the south, though Maryland itself is often regarded as a southern state.

Washington DC is, of course, the nation’s capital and has many famous sights that are well worth seeing. In terms of walking, USA locations on your itinerary can be spread over wide distances, and being on a guided tour under the supervision of an expert tour leader may help you see more. In the capital, the accompaniment of an experienced tour leader will ensure you see all the important places of interest, with a history lesson in politics thrown in!

Moving north, you reach what were the original industrial heartlands of the USA in states such as Pennsylvania, New York and Massachusetts. This is the area in which what we now know as the USA began, in the period from the early English colonisation moving through to the war of independence, with its links to centres such as Concorde, Philadelphia and Lexington.

The far west

Due to the influence of Hollywood, perhaps few parts of the USA are as well known as California and the western states of Nevada, Colorado, Arizona and Utah. If you love exploring and city walking, USA centres such as San Francisco and Los Angeles may be for you.

On the other hand, if you feel yourself to be of a rather more rugged character there are excellent walking opportunities available in world-famous locations such as the Grand Canyon, Monument Valley and Yellowstone national park.

If you do decide on a holiday involving walking, USA destinations will ensure that you are spoilt for choice!
