Visiting the Top 3 Sights in Kortrijk

If you are lucky enough to stay in a Kortrijk hotel for a few nights then you will find yourself in one of the most beautiful cities in Belgium. This historic, ancient settlement is easy on the eye and has plenty for the tourist to see and do when they visit. Although there are many more things to see when you visit Kortrijk, here are three of the best that you should not miss for reason.

1. Broeltorens

Witness the incredible history of Kortrijk in the form of these two impressive towers. Broeltorens translates as the Broel Towers, and it is an important landmark of the city and one that you will probably be able to see from your Kortrijk hotel.

Although the two towers look the same, they were actually built at different times: the southern tower in 1385 and the northern tower in 1415. Together with the artillery tower they form the last remaining parts of the city wall. You will also want to check out the 12th century bridge between the two towers, and the statue in the middle, of John of Nepomuk the patron saint of the drowned.

2. The Beguinage

The Beguinage is one of the most beautiful parts of the city, and a visit to this UNESCO World Heritage site is well recommended when you stay in a Kortrijk hotel. Most Flemish towns have one of these, and this one is a medium-sized beguinage comprising 42 houses – although some in other cities contain 100 houses or more. Founded in the 13th century, it comprises a small collection of whitewashed houses, a cobbled courtyard and picturesque gardens. The current houses date back to the 17th century.

3. The Groeninge Monument

This monument was erected to commemorate the Battle of the Golden Spurs – the most important battle in the city’s history, when Flemish noblemen beat the French knights. It is a tale often told by the staff in many a Kortrijk hotel. The battle took place in 1302, and this monument was erected to commemorate the 600th anniversary. It is located in Groeningepark, the site of the Groeninge battle, and represents the Virgin of Flanders, pointing towards the defeated French. Also worth a look is the Groeningegate, an arch that was also built to mark the 600th anniversary of the triumph, which is situated nearby.
