Songs About Pagers
When pagers first appeared on the scene in the early 1990s they were the predecessors to mobile phones and played a pivotal role in romance, with many couples inventing their own romantic text codes for pagers. Of course, they also played a role in the dating scene with many hopefuls exchanging pager numbers and waiting for the object of their affections to page them. As everyone knows, heartbreak inspires good music, and somehow during this era the humble pager found itself appearing in the lyrics of many a pop record. Here are some of the best:
Immature – Pagers
Immature were an American R&B group that formed in Los Angeles in 1992. Their third album released in 1995 featured a song called Pagers. This song contains lyrics like “feelings that I try to hide baby, keep showin’ girl, when I hit you on the side of your pager”. The song told the story of a boy and his obsession with a girl who refuses to answer the calls she gets from him on her pager. The song was never released as a single, but the album made it to number 76 in the Billboard Top 200. The band, made up of Romeo, Batman, Halfpint and LDB, is still around today and tours under the new name iMX.
The Cool Kids – Gold and a Pager & Beeper
This hip-hop duo released a song called Gold and a Pager, which included lyrics like “…you gotta check my hip cause my beepers on blast; just got it activated, you ain’t even gotta ask
so if my phones off you can page my ….”. The chorus repeats the line with a little bit of gold and a pager throughout the song. When the band formed in 2005, pagers were already in decline and so the lyrics about pagers were considered to be more retro than up to date. The Cool Kids are better known for their celebrity collaborations, which include Maroon 5 and Ludacris, than they are their cutting edge songs about pagers! In keeping with their theme though, the hip-hop pair have also released a second song entitled Beeper, where the artists sing about being called up on their pagers whilst they are sat in the VIP area of a nightclub sipping on champagne. All in all,it seems that the Cool Kids are quite enamoured with pagers; we wonder how they got their names?
Kid Sister – Beeper
It seems that hip-hop artists just love writing songs about pagers and Kid Sister is no exception. Melissa Young, better known as Kid Sister, is probably best known for her duet Pro Nails with Kanye West. However, the 30-year old rapper also released a single called Beeper with the catchy lyrics; hit me up on my beeper. The song then ends with the hilarious verse, “Mama got it for 199 at Smart Beat, paged girl 911 in a heartbeat, and you ain’t gonna get none ‘cos you paged me 69”. Kid Sister teamed up with The Count & Sinden to release this 2008 single about pagers, the song reached number 69 in the UK chart; but, let’s just hope that no one paged the chart position to Kid Sister.
