Getting Your Foot in to a Career in Public Relations
PR is a very popular career choice, and competition for jobs can be fierce. There are two options for people interested in pursuing a PR career – they can either work ‘in house’ as part of a company’s dedicated team, or join a public relations agency. London is the centre of the industry in the UK and, as a result, is the place that many people focus their search for work.
Getting a foot in the door
An un paid internship with an agency is a great way to show your dedication and what you can do and make sure that your name is at the top of the list when companies come around to hiring permanent staff. During this time you will also be able to make contacts in the industry and media, which will certainly help you in your search if your internship doesn’t result in a job. If you are able to work for between a month and three months, then it is well worth approaching a reputable public relations agency. London is an ideal place to seek out a position but there are PR agencies in every city across the UK. Most reputable agencies will pay lunch and travel expenses to interns. It’s always worth sending a speculative e-mail, but with such high competition for jobs, do make sure that you look through the agency’s website, familiarise yourself with their clients, and show where you can add value.
Education
Aside from work experience, there are other ways to enhance your prospects of securing a job in PR. A degree is a prerequisite for most roles in a public relations agency. London is a good place to study as there are plenty of PR agencies at which you can gain work experience during your school holidays. These days you can take a degree in pretty much anything, including PR or general communications. Other subjects such as English and History will demonstrate a flair for writing and presenting information, key skills to carry forward into a PR career. Law, Economics, Politics, Business, Languages and Sciences are also good subjects with regard to a future in communications.
The Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM) together with the Communications, Advertising and Marketing (CAM) Education Foundation, offer a ‘Marketing Communications’ diploma. This qualification is for people who make marketing decisions in business, other than PR agencies, and will help candidates develop vital skills and gain an in-depth understanding of the public relations process.
Persistence pays
A great way to impress employers is to do as many things related to PR as you can, which– will show that you have dedication and commitment. Getting involved with a student newspaper or helping to put on events can be really useful in making your application stand out to a busy PR manager who is looking through a big stack of CVs.
PR graduate schemes are hugely competitive, so an internship really is the best way to get a foot in the door – any potential employer worth their salt will offer expenses, so the burden for travelling shouldn’t be so high. Those couple of months whilst on an internship could prove to be the most valuable period of your career.
