Discover Kefalonia – The Lixourion Peninsula
The beautiful Greek Islands are among the Mediterranean world’s most popular tourist destinations. People go there for the sunshine that somehow seems brighter than anywhere else in the world, for the amazing marriage of sea and sky, and for the gorgeous beaches. Although there are excellent hotels and resorts, what could be more romantic, or more private, than a luxury villa? For people who want to look into luxury villas, Kefalonia has everything you could ask for; beautiful villas with all the modern conveniences, as well as wonderful views. You can even have your own private swimming pool. Kefalonia is the largest island in the Ionian group off the coast of western mainland Greece. It is one of the most thinly populated of the Greek Islands, and unlike some of its neighbours, it has not been overdeveloped. Therefore, the island retains most of its natural beauty, and visitors rarely encounter crowds.
An Excellent Beach Lover’s Base
Once visitors have arrived and settled into their comfortable luxury villas, Kefalonia is just waiting for them to get out and do some exploring. The Lixourion Peninsula is well worth a visit. The quickest way to get there is by ferry from Argostoli, the principal town on the island. The ferry will land you at the little town of Lixouri. There isn’t much to see in this community, but if you are a beach lover, it’s a great base from which to explore the beaches along the south coast of the Lixourion Peninsula. The two most popular are Petani and Ayios Spyridhonas. Lipedha, just two kilometres south of Lixouri, has rich red sand and some unusual sandstone rock formations. If you head out to the southern part of the peninsula, which local people call Katoi, you can still see evidence of the devastating earthquake of 1953. In some places there are strange looking landscapes of subsided fields and orchards, and mounds that were pushed up from the earth. If you take the road to Xi beach, six kilometres (3.7 miles) from Lixouri, you can take a detour to Megas Lakkos (Big Hole), a lake with a narrow red beach lying below steep cliffs. Four kilometres (2.5 miles) to the southwest is Kounopetra, where there is a tiny beach and an interesting rock formation. At nearby Agrosykia there is an even better beach that is backed by white chalky cliffs. A little farther on, in an area called Vatsa, there is another sandy beach called Ayios Nikolaos. There are some lovely villas here,
The Monastery of Kipourean
The west coast of the Lixourion Peninsula has one of the island’s best lookout points from which to watch gorgeous sunsets; the Monastery of Kipourean. This small monastery, about 14 kilometres (8.6 miles) from Lixouri, was largely rebuilt in the 1970s. It sits high up on a cliff overlooking a wild sea coast. The views are terrific. On the Ayios Spyridhomas Inlet, also called Porto Atheras, you can visit the traditional village of Atheras. There is a beach, and you can have a first hand encounter with Greek Island culture. For visitors looking for a memorable Greek Island experience with luxury villas, Kefalonia is always a wonderful choice.
