A Taste of Innsbruck
Innsbruck airport transfers can speedily and economically get you to your final ski destination before you know it. The trouble is, all too often visitors’ itineraries take them to some, admittedly beautiful, rural locations in the mountains, and visiting the city itself is sometimes overlooked.
Instead of simply allowing your Innsbruck airport transfers whisk you off to your ski holiday, why not make an effort to visit the city centre and spend some time there first?
Here’s why…
This city encapsulates just about everything that you may imagine when you are thinking about The Tyrol and Austria in general. It has elegance and charm – courtesy of its extraordinarily long and rich history – generations of royal patrons, and a vast range of things to see and do.
Yet going into the beauty of some of the sights, it is perhaps worth saying a word or two about culture.
If your mental images of Austria involve things such as incredible coffee, marvellous hot chocolate and various forms of bad-for-the-waistline pastries, then this delightful city can deliver on all that for you. But the city isn’t just a one-trick pony. The old town is a sheer delight to wander around and you’ll find a wealth of small streets and back alleys populated with some great bars, cafes and unique boutiques. Leaving to one side those must-see attractions, the city is a joy to experience, and very laid-back in a way that you may not automatically associate with Austria.
Once your Innsbruck airport transfers have deposited you at your accommodation and you have soaked up some intangible elements of the culture, you may be interested in a little more of the history.
Top of the ‘must see’ list is usually The Golden Roof – a very early 16th century structure – and the Hofkirche – a beautiful 16th century church. The latter has a range of life-sized standing statues of various royalty, which has echoes, in a way, of the famous Chinese standing terracotta army – except that these statues are in bronze.
While you are in the Altstadt (old town), it is also worth going to see the Stadtturm (the old watchtower) – a large and imposing relic of rather more troubled times in the past. If you like a combination of breathtaking architecture and scnery, it’s worth getting up into the hills just on the outskirts of Innsbruck to see Ambras Castle – a seat of the Hapsburg royal rulers. The castle is jammed full of opulent rooms and incredible exhibits, including an armoury with some interesting medieval and early modern weaponry.
Although Innsbruck airport transfers will get you quickly into the centre, once you are there you will wish to explore the various quarters of the city. The good news is that there is a widespread, efficient and modestly priced tram system. So, whether you are eventually heading off elsewhere or are looking for a destination for a long weekend break, Innsbruck is worthy of consideration – relax and enjoy this great city.
